MUSTANGS OPEN SEASON AT HESSTON

At Hesston, the Salina Central Mustangs opened their 2021 Tennis Season with a first place finish. The Mustangs were led by their pair of Singles players. Junior Collin Phelps finished with a 3-0 record to capture 1st place in the #1 Singles position. The #2 Singles position was filled with Senior Austin Beatty. Beatty also won his division with a 3-0 record.

The Doubles team of Seniors Brady Stack and McCabe Green came up short in the #1 Doubles match falling to Hesston in a tiebreaker 7-8 (3). The #2 Doubles team of Juniors Lucas Nutter and Brandon Phachanla finished the day at 1-2 and a 6th place finish.

The Mustangs scored 36 points as did the host Hesston to finish 1st and 2nd. Third place went to Wichita Trinity with 24 points and Goddard with 18 points for fourth.

Salina Central is back in action on Thursday as they travel to Andover for the Andover Central Invitational.




MUSTANGS CAPTURE THE ANDOVER CENTRAL INVITATIONAL

At Andover, the Salina Central Mustangs dominate the field with three 1st place finishes and a 2nd. The Mustangs were led by the Senior Doubles team of Reed McHenry and Max Shaffer. They were 3-0 on the day and finished with an impressive 8-3 victory in the Finals over Wright/Wright of Maize South. Also at 3-0 on the day was the #2 Doubles Senior Duo of Brooks Burgoon and Aidan Speer. They ended their day with a 8-4 victory in the finals over Andover Central.

In Singles, the Mustangs were led by Senior Chase Courbot. He took the #2 Singles title with an 8-4 win over Herman of Wichita Kapaun. At #1 Singles, Junior Connor Phelps took second place falling to Tredway of Maize South in the Finals.

The Mustangs took the Team Title with 31 points, followed by Maize South and Wichita Kapaun with 23.

TSalina Central is back in action Saturday as the host the Mustang Duels in Salina.



SALINA CENTRAL TAKES THE MUSTANGS DUEL TITLE

The Mustangs were victorious Saturday taking the Mustangs Duel Title. Salina Central won 22 matches on the day winning all four Duels matches. They were followed my Maize South with 17 matches and 3 Duels won and Topeka West with 8 Matches won and 2 Duels.

The Mustangs were led by the Senior Doubles team of Reed McHenry and Max Shaffer. The duo went 4-0 on the day and defeated Wright/Wright of Maize South 8-4 in the Finals. Seniors Brooks Burgoon and Aidan Speer also went 4-0 on the day to take first in #3 Doubles. Seniors Brady Stack and McCabe Green went 3-1 and took second at #2 Doubles.

Three different Singles players went undefeated on the day. Junior Collin Phelps, Senior Chase Courbot, and Senior Austin Beatty all took their divisions, 4-0. At #1 Singles, Connor Phelps fell to third place in a very competitive field of Singles players.

The Mustangs will travel to Arkansas City on Tuesday to compete in the Arkansas City Invitational. A second squad will travel to Lindborg and compete in the Smoky Valley Invitational.




 

SALINA CENTRAL VICTORIOUS AT RON DAHLSTEN CLASSIC

The Mustangs took the Team Title in Lindsborg on Thursday. The team scored 56 points on the day followed by Hesston with 46 points and the host Smoky Valley with 45 points.

Salina Central was lead by #1 Singles player Senior Chase Courbot who went 3-1 on the day falling to Jake Lucas of Smoky Valley in the finals, 4-8. Senior Austin Beatty also finished 3-1 on the day and finished in 3rd place in Singles.

The Doubles team of Seniors Brooks Burgoon and Aidan Speer went 3-1 and took third place. They fell to Deutschendorf/Dahlsten of Hesston in a tiebreaker in the finals 7-8 (6). The other doubles pair of Juniors Lucas Nutter and Brandon Phachanla took home 9th place honors.

Salina Central will be back in action on Tuesday in the Mustang Classic at the Mustang Courts on the campus of Salina Central.



 

MUSTANGS DOMINATE THE ANDOVER INVITATIONAL

Salina Central won the Andover Invitational in impressive fashion on Thursday. They finished the meet in 1st and 2nd in both the Singles and Doubles divisions.

Seniors Reed McHenry and Max Shaffer took the Doubles title by defeating their teammates, Seniors Brady Stack and McCabe Green in the finals. The final score of the all Salina Central final was 8-4.

Little changed in the Singles division as teammates met again for the individual title. Junior brothers, Connor and Collin Phelps met in the finals with Connor Phelps coming out on top this time with a score of 8-6.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Tuesday in the Mustang Classic at the Mustang Courts on the campus of Salina Central.



 

MUSTANG CLASSIC TITLE TO SALINA CENTRAL

Salina Central came away with another team title on Tuesday. It was in dominate fashion as the finals of both Singles and Doubles were filled with Mustangs.

Juniors Connor and Collin Phelps met each other in the finals with Connor coming away with an 8-4 win. The twin brothers had a great day going a combined 7-1 on the day.

The Doubles division also saw an All-Mustang final. Seniors Reed McHenry and Max Shaffer faced off against Senior teammates Brady Stack and McCabe Green in the finals. McHenry/Shaffer came away with a hard fought 8-7 (6-2) win.

The Mustangs scored the maximum 76 points for the Championship. They were followed by Newton with 46 points, Andover with 37 points, and Hesston with 31 points.

Salina Central will be back in action next Saturday as they travel to McPherson.

 

MCPHERSON INVITATIONAL PRODUCES CO-CHAMPIONS

The Manhattan Indians and Maize Eagles came away with Co-Championship titles Saturday in McPherson. Both teams scored 53 points and were closely followed by Independence with 52 points. The Salina Central Mustangs finished fifth place.

The Mustangs were led by Seniors Chase Courbot and Austin Beatty who finished in 4th on the day in Doubles. Senior Teammates Brooks Burgoon and Aidan Speer finished 6th.

In the Singles division, Junior Brandon Phachanla finished in 15th place, while Junior teammate Lucas Nutter finished in 20th place.

Salina Central will travel to Ark City on Monday to compete in the Ark City Invitational.

 

SALINA CENTRAL SETTLES FOR SECOND PLACE AT ARK CITY

Salina Central finished in second place in the team standings at Ark City on Monday. They finished just 2 points behind the Invitational Champions from Maize South. Maize South finished with 116 points, while the Mustangs scored 114 points. In third place was Wichita Collegiate with 107 points andWichita Kapaun and Maize both with 84 points to tie for 4th place.

The Doubles team of Seniors Reed McHenry and Max Shaffer extended their season to 15-0 with another Doubles Championship. They defeated the duo from Maize South, Wright/Wright by a score of 8-3. It was the third time McHenry/Shaffer have faced Wright/Wright with Salina Central winning each contest by identical 8-3 scores.

Seniors Brady Stack and McCabe Green finished in 5th place with a win over Rogers/Murrell of Maize High School.

In Singles, Junior Connor Phelps made his way to the finals. He was defeated by Jaden Tredway of Maize South by a score of

Connor's twin brother Collin Phelps had a good day as well and finished in 6th place in a loaded Singles field.

The Mustangs are back in action on Thursday as they compete in the Salina South Invitational.

 

MUSTANGS TAKE 4TH AT TOPEKA WEST

Salina Central took fourth place as a team at Topeka West on Monday.

They were led by the Seniors Doubles team of Chase Courbot and Austin Beatty. They finished 3rd place dropping the semi final match to Cusick/Cusick of Topeka West 2-8, before taking the 3rd place match, 8-5 over Dean/Dunn of Lawrence.

Seniors Brook Burgoon and Aidan Speer finished 5th, ending the day with a 8-4 win over Sandstrom/Glotzbach of Topeka Hayden.

Junior Brandon Phachanla finished in 14th place after dropping the final match of the day to Paul Quidu of Shawnee Heights, 2-8.

Junior teammate Lucas Nutter finished in 16th place after droppin his final match 2-8 to Caden McGee of Topeka West.

 

MUSTANGS RUNNER UP AT SALINA SOUTH INVITATIONAL

Salina Central came away with a Runner Up finish at the Salina South Invitational to Manhattan. Manhattan the number ranked team in 6A scored a total of 68 points followed by the Mustangs with 54 points. Finishing in third place was Andover with 46 points and Salina South with 38 points for fourth.

The Mustangs were led by Seniors McCabe Green and Brady Stack with their championship run in Doubles. The duo defeated Craft/Poole of Manhattan by a score of 8-5 to take the title. Senior teammates Brooks Burgoon and Aidan Speer finished 3-1 on the day and took 5th place. They defeated Dean/Lewis of Valley Center 8-3 to take the 5th place medal.

In Singles, Connor Phelps rolled into the finals and met Dan Harkin of Manhattan. Phelps played very strong tennis, but dropped the match 4-8. Junior Brandon Phachanla finished 2-2 on the day and took 13th place.

The Mustangs are back in action Saturday as they host the Salina Central Invitational.

 

SALINA CENTRAL INVITATIONAL GOES TO THE MUSTANGS

The Salina Central Mustangs dominated the eight team field in capturing the Salina Central Invitational title. The Mustangs scored 74 points followed by St. James Academy of Kansas City with 53 points and Topeka West with 43 points.

The Mustangs were led by Seniors Reed McHenry and Max Shaffer as they took the Doubles title. They defeated their teammates McCabe Green and Collin Phelps by a score of 8-6.

The Singles title also went to the Mustangs as Junior Connor Phelps went 4-0 on the day. He won the title match by a score of 8-2 over Charlie Rieke of St. James Academy. Senior Brady Stack also had a great day finishing third. He defeated Paul Jittawait of Andover by a score of 8-4 to capture the consolation match.

Salina Central travels to Emporia on Tuesday to participate in the Emporia Invitational.

 

MUSTANGS TAKE SECOND AT EMPORIA INVITATIONAL

Salina Central had another nice showing as they traveled to Emporia Invitational and placed second in a very strong field. Manhattan, the #2 ranked team in 6A scored a total of 51 points to take the title. Salina Central trailed by only two points with 49 points to take second, followed by Wichita Classical with 39 for third.

The Mustangs were once again led by Seniors Reed McHenry and Max Shaffer as the won the Doubles Championship. The duo is now 27-0 on the season after a closely fought Championship match with Craft/Poole of Manhattan. The Mustang team won in a tiebreaker 8-7 (3).

Taking third in Doubles were Seniors Chase Courbot and Austin Beatty as they defeated Moorman/Kienholz of Emporia 8-6.

In Singles, Junior Collin Phelps also took 3rd, winning the consolation match over Jon Grove of Manhattan by a score of 8-2.

Fellow Junior, Lucas Nutter, took 12th after being defeated by Jack Maxwell of Liberal 8-2 in the 11th place match.

The Mustangs are back in action Thursday as they host the Salina Central Quad II meet in Salina.

 

SALINA CENTRAL NARROWLY TAKES MUSTANG QUAD

Salina Central hosted the Mustang Quad on Thursday and took the title by a single point over Goddard. The Mustangs scored a total of 9 points, while Goddard finished with 8 points and Salina South with 7 points.

The Mustangs were led by Seniors Austin Beatty and Chase Courbot as they finished as #1 Doubles Champions with a win over Huie/Keller of Goddard. Teammates Brooks Burgoon and Aidan Speer, also Seniors, were crowned #2 Doubles Champions with their victory over Lubbers/Wolfe of Goddard.

#1 Singles player, Charlie Slothower took third place in his division as a Freshman. Sophomore teammate Liam Corl finished in second place in the #2 Singles division.

The Mustangs will now travel to Andover Central to compete in the AVCTL League Championships for Division II.

 

MUSTANGS CROWNED AVCTL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

Salina Central scored a perfect 52 points to capture the AVCTL League Championships. The Mustangs had all four entries in the Finals of both Singles and Doubles.

Seniors Reed McHenry and Max Shaffer remained undefeated for the season at 30-0. They defeated teammates Senior McCabe Green and Junior Collin Phelps in the Championship Match by a score of 6-4 6-4.

The Singles Division also saw an All-Mustang Finals. Junior Connor Phelps was able to hold off Senior teammate Brady Stack by a score of 7-5 6-1.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Valley Center to compete in the 5A Regionals.

 

SALINA CENTRAL SWEEPS TITLES AT 5A REGIONAL

The Mustangs made it a clean sweep of both Singles and Doubles divisions at the 5A Regional Tennis Tournament at Valley Center. The Mustangs scored a perfect 26 points after finishing with a perfect 52 points at the AVCTL League Meet last week.

The Singles Championship saw familiar faces in twin brothers Connor and Collin Phelps. The two Juniors squared off after already completing three rounds of great tennis. Connor came out on top this time around with a 6-1 6-2 victory. The win brought Connor's Singles record to 29-5 for the season, while the loss dropped Collin to 21-6 for the year.

In the Doubles Division, Seniors Reed McHenry and Max Shaffer remained undefeated for the season and ran their record to 34-0. They defeat their teammates, Seniors Brady Stack and McCabe Green in the Finals by a score of 6-1 6-3.

The Mustangs will now travel to Maize South for the 5A STATE Tournament on Friday and Saturday, May 14-15.
